About Web Designer Docs

Web Designer Docs was created by Michelle Sullivan, a New Zealand WordPress web designer. She recognized the need for documentation specifically tailored to WordPress and enjoyed writing this content. Web Designer Docs operates as a division of her main business, Web Matters.

What is Web Designer Docs?

Web Designer Docs is a document template shop where you can buy doc files that have been road-tested in a real-life web design business. The documents are written for designers, developers, and agencies working with WordPress (and other) development stacks. Each document will help you present complex information and explain your business processes in simple terms. The documents are designed to lessen the client friction often experienced during a website build and to foster healthy ongoing client relationships.

Why Web Designer Docs?

There's a clear need for cohesive website design documentation with a consistent tone and tailored to various website systems.  Finding the time to write, proofread, and polish your words while doing the design and development work can be challenging. Not everyone can or wants to do this work, and it's probably not the best use of your time. That's where I come in. I've done a lot of the hard work of creating website documentation for myself and working with real clients. I've had extensive experience with it over the years (even before the advent of CMS systems) and enjoy doing it.

Who's behind Web Designer Docs?

That would be me! Michelle Sullivan.

I'm a 'company of one' web design business and have been building WordPress websites since 2007. Before self-employment, I worked for New Zealand internet businesses in the 1990s and mid-2000s. I frequently wrote the marketing materials, client communications, and end-user documentation in various roles. I’m now combining my knowledge of building WordPress (and other) websites for clients with what I’ve learned about client communication throughout my long career.

Frequently Asked Questions

The files are Google Docs. After clicking on the link, you'll be prompted to create a copy of the document. You can then download it and use it in Word or keep it in Google Docs.

I've intentionally used very little formatting in the documents. This means you can quickly remake them into your own style by changing the default settings for headings and fonts. Each document has a document summary and a table of contents.

The documents are licensed for use within your organization/business. You can share them internally for editing and updating, but you can't share them outside of your organization.

You are most welcome to try it. I quickly found that using an AI system to generate these types of documents was not ideal. The systems are great for generating blog posts or landing pages, but in my experience, asking ChatGPT, for example, to create an onboarding document for a WordPress web designer results in a short document that I'd consider more useful as an email.

Most of the documents pre-date the modern AI era and are based on my years of experience working in the web industry and explaining web design concepts to real clients. I have used AI to check for any gaps in my thinking, or to improve on a paragraph here and there.

I'm happy to discuss doing updates to existing documents to meet your requirements. I'm also able to do bespoke documents from scratch. So, get in touch, and let's find out what you need

Without knowing your requirements, I can't offer any guarantee. So, the documents may not be 100% a fit for your business, but you should still find them helpful. I've tried to make my descriptions of the documents really clear so that you can judge this for yourself. Many of the documents are specific to my own workflow and development stack, as I needed to start somewhere and chose to 'write what I know'. This should be obvious in the product title or the description.

No. Despite having a legal qualification (a New Zealand law degree), it's not the type of writing I want to do, and of course, it can be problematic. I recommend you look at a service like Monster Contracts for web agreements or Termageddon for website policies.
